Each chakra has a colour and is associated with different qualities. Today we will be looking at Muladhara, the root or base chakra.
Muladhura
Muladhara (meaning 'root' or 'support') is located at the base of the spine in the area around your tailbone. It is symbolized by a lotus with four petals and is the colour red. This chakra represents instinct, security, survival and basic human potential. It is also associated with the sense of smell. This chakra is about our basic human needs. It actually reminds me of Maslow's |

Affirmations
One option is to use affirmation. Affirmations are statements that you should repeat to yourself often. At least every morning after you wake up and every night before you go to bed, but the more the merrier. You can write them down on a piece of paper and carry it in your wallet. Take it out and read it often. |
- I am grounded and connected to the earth.
- I am stable, strong and healthy.
- I am connected to my body and can easily understand it's needs.
- I am open to the possibilities present to me.
- I am healthy and make choices that are good for me.
- I am a being of divine light.
- I am peaceful, protected and secure.
- I am ( list any traits you believe describe you or that you are aspiring to) i.e I am patient, kind, caring, loving ,trust worthy, loyal, unique and creative.
- I am grateful for __________ .
- I am worthy of __________ .
Meditation
Sit or lay down in a comfortable position. Take some deep breaths. In. And out. In. And out. Feel yourself begin to relax. Let go of any thoughts that come up. Just focus on your breath. Take a deep breath in. Hold it for the count of four. Breath out. Take a deep breath in. Count to four. And release. |
If this meditation doesn't suit you or you prefer a recording to listen to you can try the Root Chakra Meditation. It is a very short meditation that you can easily fit into a busy day.
Seed Mantra (meditation)
Seed mantras are basic mantras that are used during meditation to harmonize your energy. Sound is a vibration and just like the vibrational sound of a tuning fork, you can use the vibrational sound of a seed mantra to 'tune' your chakras - clearing away any energy that doesn't share the same resonance in the process.
"LAM" (pronounced lum) is the seed mantra for the root chakra. You can chant this seed mantra as part of your normal meditative practices or as an extra meditate practices separate from those you might normally do. You can also add visualization in conjunction with this mantra, like those mentioned in the meditation practice above.
If you prefer something more audio to help you in your practice you can try the video below.
Yoga
I've tried to use videos by Yoga With Adriene because I think she is a really great teacher. I recently did her 30 day yoga camp and find that unlike other programs there is really no pressure to 'perform', what ever feels good for you is right by her, as I think it should be.
Yoga Asanas that help to open and align Muladhara are…
Pavanamuktasana, knee to chest pose (also known as Wind Relieving Pose)
Janu Sirsansana, head to knee Pose
The above image comes from a webpage called How to do Head of Knee Pose. It has a lot of good information on it and also a section on variations. I really recommend you check it out.
Padmasana, lotus flexion
This image is from the same website used above which gives some great direction on how to do padmasana as well as variations.
Malasana, garland pose (also known as squatting pose)
Tadasana, moutain pose
Savasana, corpse pose
