Today I learnt how to create a magic lighting effect in Photoshop. Completing this tutorial did not take long however the instructions are not very clear. This is mostly not a problem with a little trial and error I did manage to follow all the steps except for two. You can find the tutorial here. You can get bonus points if you know why I wanted to complete this tutorial!
So as you can see in the image above, the waves on text (yes it is text) coming out of the hat kind of taper off and get dull at the top. The step required me to add a mask to the layer - I had no idea how to to this. By adding a clipping mask, the only mask I really know of, the text is removed except where it shows up on the hat.
The second that I had difficulty in completing is the 'brightness' at the area just out of the hat. The instruction reads something like "...below the text and with a regular big brush like 100px add a spot of light in white." By choosing a brush and adding a white spot I get a solid colour of white, I tried fiddling with the opacity but that just make it less bright. In the end I just made a skinny line and gave it a huge outer glow... it doesn't look the same....
Here is what I made.
You see? No glow! I want a glow! I'm going to have to figure this out....
Obviously I cropped my image. I didn't want to write some quote about magic... I do like my wavy text better though! That makes me happier :D
This tutorial reminds me that if I ever write a tutorial in the future I need to give it so much detail it's sickening.
I hope this gives you some inspiration to try and create your own 'magical lighting'. Let me know if you do! And if you haven't already don't forget to like my Facebook Page so you can follow my posts easier.
Bye for Now!
